What is the BlueCruise 1.2 System and How Does it Work?
BlueCruise 1.2 is Ford’s latest hands-free highway driving assist system, classified as a Level 2 Autonomous System. It’s an evolution of adaptive cruise control technology that allows drivers to operate their vehicles hands-free on pre-mapped highways called “Blue Zones”.
Key Features
- Lane Change Assist: Allows the vehicle to change lanes automatically when the driver activates the turn signal.
- In-Lane Repositioning: Automatically adjusts the vehicle’s position within the lane when passing large vehicles or when another vehicle encroaches on the lane.
- Predictive Speed Assist: Automatically slows the vehicle when approaching curves or changes in speed limits.
How It Works
BlueCruise 1.2 uses a combination of cameras, radars, GPS, and a comprehensive map database. The system:
- Monitors the driver’s eyes to ensure they remain focused on the road.
- Uses adaptive cruise control and lane-centering to keep the vehicle in its lane and maintain a set distance from other vehicles.
- Operates only on pre-mapped highways (Blue Zones), with over 130,000 miles currently available in the US.
When activated, BlueCruise 1.2 takes control of acceleration, braking, and steering, allowing the driver to remove their hands from the wheel and foot from the pedals.
Limitations
- Cannot operate in hands-free mode on unmapped roads or in construction zones.
- Requires driver attention and readiness to intervene at all times.
- May have difficulty recognizing some construction zones or temporary road changes.
BlueCruise 1.2 represents a significant improvement over its predecessor, offering smoother operation and fewer handoffs to the driver.
