Why your brakes squeak when wet:

The simple explanation for squeaky brakes when it’s wet is that water acts as a lubricant between your brake pads and rotors. The squeak could be the sound of the brakes slipping, and that’s a safety problem.  You want your brakes to get a good grip on the rotor every time you press the brake pedal.

When you hear the squeak, it doesn’t necessarily mean all your brakes need attention- after all, brake pads wear at different rates.   The problem could also be a warped or lipped rotor- that’s when the rotor hasn’t worn evenly, so it’s collecting water in wet conditions.  That prevents your brake pad from getting a good surface grip when you brake.   Another problem if you’ve got a rotor that has warped or lipped is that when water collects there, it can linger and cause rust to develop.  And rust can also cause your brakes to make a racket when you press the brake pedal.  .

The good news is that driving in wet conditions doesn’t always lead to brake problems.  After all, when you brake it causes a complex system of events to go into motion:  friction occurs as the pads grab the rotors, which warms them up.   That process creates heat, and that heat will dry the moisture there if all your braking elements are in good shape.  But if squeaky brakes are happening pretty frequently when it’s wet, the smart move is to let D’Orazio Ford’s highly skilled service technicians check them out for your safety.    We have all the right parts and tools to evaluate the problem and provide the right solution, if needed- whether at our service center or on the road with our Mobile Brake Service.
